Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the option to challenge particular rulings from the official, mirroring the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
