Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
