The anticipation about The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
