Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say early analysis suggest the substance was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; investigators are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to solve the case" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior representative stated the incident rendered him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he stated on a platform, referring to the murder of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
