A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.

One account, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on non-public details," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with users able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting industry.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
