A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
